Robert Morris WBB Beats Akron in Home Opener, Improves to 2-0 on Season
The second season of Robert Morris women’s basketball under Chandler McCabe is off to the best start imaginable.
After picking up a tough win in the season opener, Robert Morris hosted Akron at the UPMC Events Center for its home opener.
Not only did the Colonials improve to 2-0 on the young season following the 70-61 win, McCabe appears to have struck gold with her transfer portal class which is headlined by guard Aislin Malcolm, who recorded her second 20-point game of the season in the win over the Zips.

Robert Morris quickly jumped out in front of Akron due to another fast start by Malcolm, who scored eight of the Colonials’ 15 first quarter points. The Colonials carried a 15-10 lead into the second quarter after Malcolm nearly outscored the entire Zips roster herself in the first.
After a couple of baskets by Noa Givon helped the Colonials extend their lead to 25-19, the Zips fought back throughout the remainder of the half and found a way to tie the game up at 29-29 on a buzzer-beating three by Ni’Rah Clark.
Like in the season opener, the main separator for the Colonials was one dominate quarter on both ends of the floor. That quarter happened to be the third quarter in the win over the Zips as the Colonials outscored them 13-7 in the period.
The Colonials opened the third quarter up on a 10-0 run which put them ahead 39-29 before the Zips could even get settled into the flow of the second half. The Zips managed to cut the deficit to six points before the end of the quarter but the Colonials answered with a 6-0 run to open the fourth which put their advantage back at 10 points.
The Zips managed to go on a run of their own in the fourth which allowed them to get the score back to as close as 52-48 before Malcolm decided enough was enough and iced the game herself.
Following a successful and-one by Clark, which made the score 52-48, Malcolm went on a personal 6-1 run, which re-extended the Colonials lead to nine with just under four minutes to play.
Clark tried to rally the Zips, scoring the next seven points for the team which cut the deficit back down to five, but it was too little, too late. The Colonials managed to close the win out by going 8-of-8 from the free throw line in the final minute of the game.
Robert Morris gets a couple of days off before its next game which comes on Thursday evening on the road against in-state rival St. Francis (PA) in what likely will be the Colonials last ever road trip to Loretto.
