Robert Morris Uses Efficient Shooting Day to Down St. Francis in Non-Conference Finale
Robert Morris (10-4) made its likely final trip ever out to Loretto to take on former NEC foe St. Francis (PA) (2-11) in the Colonials’ non-conference finale and final contest prior to the holiday break.
While Robert Morris was forced to overcome another double-digit deficit, it was a far less dramatic comeback win than games earlier in the season as after the the lead changed near the end of the first half, the Colonials were able to keep the Red Flash at a comfortable distance throughout the second half.
Part of the reason that the Red Flash managed to build a 24-14 lead midway through the opening half was due to the Colonials being short handed, and Andy Toole’s plan to play some of the younger guys on the roster such as Samuel Obenjo and Eddie Cooke III.
Despite that, timely threes and unselfish passing by Ryan Prather Jr. and DeSean Goode’s second 20-point performance of the season guided the Colonials to the 79-70 victory.

Goode led all scorers and rebounders with 24 points and eight rebounds. He shot lights out in the win over the Red Flash as he went 9-of-13 from the field which included a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range.
Prather made most of his noise from the field in the first half as he was 4-of-6 from three at halftime before he finished 5-of-9 for 18 points. The second-year Colonial added a career-high nine assists in the win for a near double-double.
Goode opened the game’s scoring but St. Francis immediately answered with a fierce 14-5 run which included four threes. The Red Flash eventually used another scoring run, 6-0, later in the half to build its biggest lead of the game at 24-14.
Cooke ended the Red Flash run with a pair of free throws, and then the Colonials went to work clawing back from the double-digit deficit as Cooke added another free throw while Prather nailed two triples from the exact same spot on the wing that cut the score to 27-23.
After a Red Flash three made the score 30-23, the Colonials closed the first half out on a 14-4 run which included back-to-back threes from Prather that tied the game at 34-34 and gave them the lead at 37-34 just before halftime.

Robert Morris carried the momentum that the 6-0 run gave them in the final minute of the first half into the second half and made it a 9-0 run before St. Francis finally responded, but the Colonials already managed to build a 40-34 lead.
The two teams traded buckets over the next few minutes before Zion Russell scored 10-straight points for the Red Flash which included back-to-back threes to cut the Colonials’ lead to just one at 45-44.
Needing an answer to the Red Flash run, the Colonials turned to their built-in mismatch Josh Hill and he hit a three before Cam Wilds hit a three of his own. Cooke followed the threes with his first field goal of the season to give the Colonials a 53-46 lead.
That was a huge difference in the second half, the Colonials bench output as they entered halftime with zero bench points but ended the game with 22 in that category.
Despite the nice scoring run from the Colonials’ bench, they held just a 55-50 lead heading into the under-12 timeout of the second half. That is when Toole turned to another bench guy in Obenjo as he drew up a fantastic inbound play to the Swedish forward for a contact dunk that really gave the Colonials the momentum that they needed to coast to the win.

The dunk started an 11-3 run that gave the Colonials their largest lead of the afternoon at 13 points at 66-53. Despite the Red Flash basically matching the big run with a 12-5 run themselves to make the score 71-65, it did not feel that close as the Colonials dominated the second half.
Goode ended the Red Flash run with a layup and a pair of free throws that pushed the Colonials’ advantage back to double-figures with just over a minute left and some free throws by Wilds and Albert Vargas closed the non-conference finale out.
Robert Morris now enters the holiday break with a 10-4 record which includes a 2-1 Horizon League record. The Colonials will get eight days off before they welcome Northern Kentucky into the UPMC Events Center on Dec. 29. as it is only league games the rest of the way for Andy Toole’s team.
