While the Robert Morris softball team fell to Cleveland State in the first game of a pivotal three-game series, the Colonials saw two program records be broken as their historic offense continues to shine.

In the opening game of the series against the Vikings, the Colonials broke the program’s record for most home runs in a season when Courtney Poulich clubbed her second and the team’s third home run of the afternoon.

Her homer marked the 41st home run by the Colonials this season which broke the record that stood for 17 seasons. Additionally, Poulich’s two home runs marked her 11th and 12th home runs of the season which also broke the program’s single-season record for most home runs by a single player.

While Robert Morris already clinched a spot in the six-team field of the Horizon League Championships, the series against the Vikings will decide the league’s regular season champion and who gets hosting rights in the tournament.

After two scoreless innings by each team, the Colonials jumped ahead in the top of the third inning when Anna Resnik hit a two-run home run to center field and Poulich followed her up with a solo shot later in the inning.

The Vikings got two runs back in the bottom half of the third before they eventually tied the game in the fifth inning on an RBI single.

The Colonials jumped back in front once the game reached extra innings when Poulich hit her second homer of the afternoon but the Vikings rallied once again and scored the game-tying and game-winning runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Colonials wrap up their Horizon League regular season schedule on Sunday when they complete their three-game series against top-seeded Cleveland State. The last series of the regular season comes at the start of May when they travel back to Ohio for a three-game series against Bowling Green.

The Horizon League Championships start on May 7.
