Robert Morris Football Fans Are Attempting to Sabotage Akron’s Wild Promotion

Every football fan has grown accustomed to yelling at the television screen over the course of a football season because of a questionable play call. Most of the time, those same fans would say that they could do a better job than the head coach or offensive coordinator.

Now, one “fan” has the chance to prove it thanks to Akron’s athletic director Andrew Goodrich.

Goodrich devised a plan in hopes of bringing some buzz and attention to the Zips’ football program. His idea was to allow a “fan” chosen via a raffle system the chance to script the Zips’ opening drive of the game in the team’s home opener against Robert Morris.

All it takes to enter the drawing is the purchase of an Akron football season ticket.

The catch is, anybody can enter the raffle, including a Robert Morris supporters and some Colonial Crazies have already jumped on the opportunity to help out the Colonials in form of sabotage as they started scooping up Akron season tickets in hopes of winning the contest.

While Robert Morris fans, and about 22 million other X users, are making the most of the promotion, why would Akron choose the Robert Morris game?

Not only is Robert Morris the first home game on Akron’s schedule, but the Colonials are an FCS program heading into a matchup against an FBS opponent. That gives Akron a little bit more leeway in regard to making bold decisions as the Zips will likely be a heavy favorites heading into the game.

“It’s the home opener, right, and we’re an FCS program, right?” Robert Morris athletic director Dr. Ron Moses said to David Ubben of The Athletic. “So I understand this is the one where they probably feel like, ah, we’ll probably win this one. But we’ll kind of go and see. It puts the pressure back on them, not us,”

Moses is very familiar with Goodrich as the two worked together in the past while at the University of South Florida. Upon hearing about and seeing the immediate success of the promotion, he called it a “genius” idea as it achieved Akron’s goal of bringing new eyes to the Zips’ football program.

Moses also added in his conversation with The Athletic that Robert Morris is planning a response that could possibly include Pittsburgh native and ESPN personality Pat McAfee, though nothing is finalized as of yet.

Regardless of who wins the raffle, and if ole’ Bobby Mo will match the craziness with some of their own, eyes from all over the country will be on Akron and Robert Morris for at least one drive come mid-September.
