Former Robert Morris Defensive Back Released From NFL Roster
Going from playing football in the Northeast Conference to being on a 53-man roster in the National Football League is a rare career path, but for former Robert Morris standout defensive back Rob Carter Jr., like any other football player, it is one that he hopes to achieve one day.
Carter was just one step away from achieving that goal after the Indianapolis Colts signed him to a reserve/futures contract over the offseason, and then to the their practice squad out of training camp, but now he will look for another route to an active NFL roster as the Colts decided to release him following the team’s Week One loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
After going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, Carter accepted an invite to the Ravens’ rookie minicamp but never received an official contract offer so he took his talents north of the border and signed with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL). In his first season with the Lions, Carter recorded 51 tackles, five interceptions, a pick-six and one forced fumble.
“Robert earned every bit of this opportunity,” the BC Lions said in statement after Carter signed his reserve/futures deal with Indianapolis. “He started every game, performed at a very high level and made some of the most outstanding individual plays we’ve seen in recent memory.”
Carter played his final two collegiate seasons at Robert Morris where he even went viral for his ridiculous interception against Utah State in the Colonials’ 2024 season opener. He amassed 66 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks and five interceptions  across 22 games in a Colonials’ uniform.
He hauled in four of his five interceptions as a senior and even started to play on the offensive side of the ball by the end of the season as he made two catches for 12 yards. Prior to his time at Robert Morris, Carter attended the University of Virginia at Wise, where he played in 22 games and recorded 77 tackles while starring on special teams.
It is unknown what is next for the former Robert Morris standout, but with his excellent rookie tape from the CFL and his abilities that earned him a spot on the Colts’ initial practice squad, Carter should land on his feet somewhere in the coming weeks or months.
