The Robert Morris softball team (27-16, 16-7 HL) officially clinched the No. 2-seed in the upcoming Horizon League Championships after top-seeded Cleveland State (22-19, 17-7 HL) won one of its three games against Oakland over the weekend.

With that, the Colonials first game of the tournament will be played on Thursday afternoon against the winner of No. 3-seed IU Indy and No. 6-seed Green Bay.

After starting the season at 4-9, Robert Morris went on a tear as they won 23 of its last 31 games including winning six of its seven conference series and a huge win over ACC foe, Pitt. The surge was the result of a historic season from the plate.

The Colonials lead the Horizon League in team batting average (.308), runs (267), home runs (43) and RBIs (238) among many other offensive stats. The team broke multiple program records during the regular season including home runs, doubles, stolen bases, and RBIs.

On an individual level, outfielder Courtney Poulich paced the Colonials with her program-record 12 home runs in a single season. The Colonials and Coach Varner also received a historic freshman season from Mary Brant who clubbed 10 homers and had the team’s second highest batting average (.352).

While the offense carried them through the first half of their surge, the Colonials’ pitching came around as the staff finished the regular season with the league’s second best ERA (3.92) and the lowest opponent batting average (.256).

Ace pitcher Madison DeVault led the staff as she finished the season with a career-high 11 wins while she had a team-best 2.48 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 14 complete games and two shutouts.

As the team sits at 27 wins, they are just three wins away from clinching the program’s second 30-win season under head coach Jexx Varner.

While the team awaits its next opponent, what the team accomplished this season is nothing short of astonishing and it will go down as one of the best overall seasons by any Robert Morris sports team ever.
