Robert Morris Athletics Introduces New Men’s Wrestling Program
The Robert Morris University athletics department announced the addition of a new men’s wrestling program on Friday.
It is the second new athletic program that the department, under newly-hired athletic director Dr. Ron Moses, has introduced this week after announcing a new women’s flag football program on Tuesday.
The department’s decision to add a men’s wrestling program is not a mind-blowing one as Pennsylvania, and in more specific Western Pennsylvania, is a hotbed for wrestling talent.
“Western Pennsylvania’s wrestling tradition has been built by generations of outstanding athletes, dedicated coaches, and passionate families,” Moses said. “Adding men’s wrestling at Robert Morris gives talented student-athletes another opportunity to compete at the Division I level close to home while earning an outstanding education. We want young wrestlers throughout this region, and beyond, to see a future for themselves at RMU, and we’re excited to build a competitive program that our campus, alumni, and wrestling community can rally around.”
With the talent in the WPIAL and its surrounding areas, the Colonials can quickly become a local powerhouse in the wrestling scene.
The Colonials are not set to compete in this year’s wrestling season but rather will have its inaugural season next season during the 2027-28 academic year. A national search for the program’s first-ever head coach is already underway according to Moses and a conference affiliation will be officially announced once everything is finalized.
The addition of men’s wrestling is a milestone for Robert Morris as it is now the 20th varsity-level sport offered at the school.
