Robert Morris outlasted Green Bay in extra innings on Thursday to move onto the next round of the Horizon League Softball Championships. The No. 2-seeded Colonials matched the No. 6-seeded Phoenix pitch-for-pitch and hit-for-hit as they battled from behind in the eighth inning to win 4-3.

While the tournament is double-elimination, a win over the Phoenix gives the Colonials some wiggle room as if they would have lost, they would have needed to win four-straight games to win the title.

While there were fireworks from both sides once the game reached extra innings, the game was a classic pitchers duel between the Colonials’ ace Madison DeVault and the Phoenix’s ace Genesis Eggart.

After each team went scoreless in the first inning, the Phoenix jumped ahead in the top of the second on an RBI-double from Aidyn Messma.

The Colonials eventually answered and tied the game at one run a piece in the bottom of the third inning after Logan Black beat out a lead-off infield single and managed to reach second on a fielders choice before Courtney Poulich singled her in.

Robert Morris took their its lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Poulich blasted her first homer of the tournament and 13th of the season over the center field wall.

Green Bay immediately answered in the top half of the next inning on a solo home run from Jenna Redder which tied the game up at 2-2, which is where it stayed until the eventful eight inning.

In the top half of the eighth, the Phoenix used a solo shot from Brooke Schwa to take a 3-2 lead. DeVault managed to lock it up over the rest of the inning to keep it just a one-run deficit.

With their back against the wall as they potentially faced moving down to the losers bracket, the Colonials rallied behind their offense just as they did all season long. Alaina Koutsogiani started the inning off with a lead-off triple and then scored on a suicide squeeze two batters later.

The suicide squeeze forced a throw to home which allowed Sequoia Dunlap to reach first base. Dunlap managed to reach second on a fielder choice and she later scored the game-winning run on a RBI-single from Black.

With the win, the Colonials stay lossless in the tournament and will play No. 4-seed Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday at 2:30 p.m. as the Mastodons managed to upset top-seeded Cleveland State in Thursday’s opening game.
