Robert Morris Softball Keeps Title Hopes Alive With Win in Game One of Final Regular Season Series

The Robert Morris softball team (27-15, 16-7 HL) hopes of winning the Horizon League regular-season title stayed alive as first-place Cleveland State fell to Oakland to start the weekend. In order for the Colonials to clinch first-place, they need the Vikings to be swept by the Golden Grizzlies this weekend.
Additionally, the Colonials opened their weekend series up with a 6-0 win over Bowling Green in the team’s final regular season series of the year.

While Robert Morris already clinched a spot in the six-team field of the Horizon League Championships, the Vikings’ series against the Golden Grizzles will decide the league’s regular season champion and who gets hosting rights in the tournament.
With that, obviously the Colonials still want to win the current series against non-conference foe Bowling Green but the results of the series cannot help them in regard to winning the league.
The opening-game victory over the Eagles was fueled by the team’s historic offense once again but the Colonials also got a dominate pitching performance from their ace pitcher, Madison DeVault, who struck out 10 batters over seven scoreless innings.
DeVault’s shutout was the fourth of her career while her 10 strikeouts marked the fourth double-digit strikeout game of her four-year career.
After three scoreless innings from both teams, the Colonials busted the game wide open in the fourth inning behind multiple errors from the Falcons. After Anna Resnik singled to get on base, Mary Brant walked which allowed Jess Matheny to hit a two-out RBI-single to right field which scored Resnik.
A throwing error allowed Brant to score and Matheny to reach third base before another error allowed Matheny to score. The back-to-back errors allowed the Colonials to lead 3-0 after the fourth inning.
The Colonials managed to add onto their lead in the top of the fifth inning when Brant hit a three-run home run. The freshman’s 10th homer of the season made the score 6-0 in favor of Robert Morris, which is what the score stayed as until DeVault closed the game out for her 11th win of the season.
Robert Morris wraps its Horizon League regular season schedule on Saturday when it completes its three-game series against the Bowling Green. The Horizon League Championships start on May 7.
