Despite sticking close with No. 5-ranked Florida State through the first few innings of the game, Robert Morris fell to the Seminoles in the opening game of the NCAA Tournament Regionals on Friday afternoon by the score of 10-1.

The Seminoles used a five-run third inning to kill any of the momentum that the Colonials built as the regional host cruised to a run-rule victory over the Horizon League champions.

The Seminoles’ ace pitcher Annabelle Widra blanked the Colonials in the top half of the first inning before the lead-off batter in the bottom half of the inning rounded the bases for the game’s first run.

Seminoles’ shortstop Isa Torres kicked the scoring off after she roped a triple to center field and came around to score when the relay throw found its way into the Colonials’ dugout for an error which gifted Torres home.

Colonials’ ace Madison DeVault settled in after the lead-off batter as she managed to blank the Seminoles’ offense over the next two innings. The Colonials had chances to tie the game in both of the second and third innings but failed to capitalize on either opportunity.

Jess Matheny managed to shoot a ball to the right-center gap in the top half of the second inning for a two-out triple but Widra got Sequoia Dunlap to strike out in the next at-bat which ended the inning.

Then, in the top half of the third, Logan Black hit a one-out double off of Widra but Kaylyn Hopf followed with a line out to center and Anna Resnik popped out to third base to end the inning.

The third inning is when the flood gates opened as the Seminoles managed to bat around and plate five runs in the process. The outburst also managed to run DeVault out of the game after just 2.2 innings of work.

The Seminoles added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to push the game out of reach and into run-rule territory.

The Colonials came to bat in the top of the fifth with their work cut out for them as they needed to score three runs to avoid the run rule but managed to only get one.

Matheny opened the inning with her second extra-base hit of the game as she doubled to left-center field and Dunlap followed with a single which put runners on the corners with no outs. After the next batter struck out, Black reached on a fielding error which allowed Matheny to score the Colonials’ lone run of the game.

While the Colonials suffered a tough loss to a title-contending team, their season is not over yet. The Colonials will face off against Auburn at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in an elimination game. If the Colonials manage to defeat the Tigers, they will play a second elimination game on Saturday against the loser of Florida State and South Florida.

The Regional concludes with the championship final on Sunday, May 18.
