Reports from earlier in the week stated that the Horizon League Player of the Year and former Robert Morris star forward Alvaro Folgueiras planned to to visit three high-profile programs as he searched for his new college basketball home.

After taking visits to Providence, Villanova and Iowa, Folgueiras decided to commit to the Hawkeyes and new head coach Ben McCollum on Sunday, according to multiple sources.

Not only does his decision rule out any potential return to Robert Morris, it sets up a revenge match of sorts as the Colonials are scheduled to open the 2025-26 season at Iowa against Folgueiras and the Hawkeyes.

This past season, the 6-foot-9 sophomore from Spain earned the Horizon League Player of the Year award after averaging 13.9 points, 9.1 rebounds and shooting 41% from 3-point range. Those numbers were a huge jump from his freshman season at Robert Morris when he averaged 5.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and shot 28% from 3-point range.

Folgueiras was a key component on a Colonials team that reached its first NCAA Tournament since 2015 and won the program’s first ever Horizon League Championship. Like Folgueiras, the other four starters that played alongside him this past season all entered the transfer portal following the season.

Folgueiras joins former front court mate Amarion Dickerson as the only former Robert Morris players to commit to a new team to this point of the offseason as Dickerson committed to Southern California on April 5.

In total, seven additional players from the Colonials’ Horizon League Championship team still sit in the transfer portal with Kam Woods being the headliner. Reports linked a multitude of high-major programs to Woods over the last few weeks including Pitt and Duquesne.

With arguably the Colonials’ two best players from last year’s squad officially off to new homes, head coach Andy Toole has a long way to go in regard of reloading the roster. Toole and his staff landed a trio of transfer portal players in the last week but still need likely six more players before the roster construction is complete.
