Robert Morris’ Mike Iuzzolino Leaving for WPIAL Head Coaching Job

It has been a busy offseason for the Robert Morris men’s basketball team not only with the reconstructing of its roster, but also its coaching staff.

On Friday, Pittsburgh Sports Now confirmed that associate head coach Mike Iuzzolino will be leaving RMU to take the head coaching job at the Sewickley Academy boys program as first reported by Neil Rudel of the Altoona Mirror.

As of now, the Colonials do not have any assistant coaches in their program after previously reliving assistant coaches Dave Fedor and Vince Johnson of their duties back in March. The Colonials are expected to make coaching addition announcements in the near future, per source.

Iuzzolino coached under head coach Andy Toole for eight seasons, with three as the associate head coach. The Colonials went 34-63 during those three seasons.

A native of Altoona, Pa., Iuzzolino was apart of the Colonials staff that guided them to a NEC title in 2020 and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament before it was shutdown due to COVID. The year prior, the Colonials advanced to the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.

Before his time with the Colonials, Iuzzolino spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Canisius.

As a player, Iuzzolino began his collegiate career with Penn State before transferring to Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pa. where he became one of the most noteworthy players in Red Flash history.

In two seasons between 1989 to 1991, he amassed 1,346 points and was named the 1991 Northeast Conference Player of the Year. During that season, Iuzzolino helped the Red Flash earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. That year, he was the only player in the country to average more than 20 points per game (24.1), shoot better than 50 percent from the floor (.542), 50 percent from beyond the arc (.528) and 80 percent (.887) at the free-throw line.

Thanks to his successful career at Saint Francis, Iuzzolino was subsequently drafted in the second round of the 1991 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks with the 35th selection.

He would go on to play two seasons in Dallas, averaging 9.0 points, 4.3 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game in 122 career contests.

After his playing days, Iuzzolino began his coaching career with the Duquesne women’s team from 2005-07 before shifting around to George Mason and Saint Vincent until he ultimately joined Canisius.

Iuzzolino, 56, will take over a Sewickley Academy boys basketball team that competes in Class 2A of the WPIAL. This past season, the Panthers went 13-10 overall and 4-6 in Section 1, earning a berth to the WPIAL playoffs before falling in the first round to No. 6 Jeannette, 52-47.
