Robert Morris Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Akron in Overtime of MAC Championship
The Robert Morris women’s lacrosse team looked primed to the head off to their third-ever NCAA Tournament but fell in overtime of the Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship game to No. 3-seed Akron, 11-10.
The Colonials entered the tournament as the league’s top seed after winning the tie-breaker over both Eastern Michigan and Akron and played host to the entire MAC Tournament at Joe Walton Stadium. The Colonials beat No. 4-seed Detroit Mercy in Thursday’s semifinal round before falling Akron on Saturday afternoon.

Akron started the game’s scoring just under five minutes into the game but the Colonials answered back with a goal from Samantha Brothers just minutes later to tie things up at one goal a piece.
The Zips jumped back ahead later in the period but the Colonials rattled off two goals before the first period expired and held a 3-2 lead as the team’s entered the second period of play.
The Colonials matched the Zips goal-for-goal in the second period as each team scored twice which allowed Robert Morris to take a small, one-goal lead into the halftime intermission as the Colonials lead by the score of 5-4.
The Colonials looked as if they were going to pull away from the Zips in the third period as they scored the period’s first four goals to extend their lead to 9-4 before Akron rallied back and scored four goals of their own before the end of the period to make the deficit just one goal once again.
The Zips tied the game up just over the midway point of the fourth period and the score stayed that way until there was around just 90 seconds left in regulation when the Colonials re-claimed the lead on another goal by Brothers. Just when it looked like the Colonials closed the door on the Zips, they tied the game up again with just 16 seconds left which sent the game to overtime.
In overtime, the Zips had control of the ball but were denied by goaltender Sydney Riker which allowed the Colonials to go on the offensive. The Colonials offensive possession ended before it could start as they turned the ball over.
The turnover allowed the Zips to get out in transition but a sleek attempt to steal the ball back almost worked for the Colonials before the ball bounced to a Zips’ player who then found Sienna Hinchcliffe in the circle. After obtaining possession in the circle, Hinchcliffe fired a shot past Riker to send the Zips to their first-ever NCAA Tournament.
With the loss, Robert Morris’ season comes to an end in disappointing fashion but after back-to-back MAC Championship appearances under head coach Courtney Grove, the Colonials’ women’s lacrosse program is in a good spot moving forward.
