Robert Morris Softball Clinches First-Round Bye in Horizon League Championships

While the Robert Morris softball team fell to Cleveland State in the first game of a pivotal three-game series, the Colonials bounced back and swept the Vikings in Sunday’s doubleheader.
The two wins over top-seeded Cleveland State clinched the Colonials a first-round bye in the 2025 Horizon League Championships and at the very least a top-two finish in the regular season standings.
Additionally, the Colonials offense continued their historic pace as they broke more program records. As a team, the Colonials set the school’s single-season record for doubles (72), stolen bases (69) and RBIs (234). The team broke the doubles and RBIs record that stood since the 1997 season while the stolen bases are the most since the 1991 season.

Robert Morris set the tone early in game one of the doubleheader as they quickly loaded the bases behind two singles and a walk before Alaina Koutsogiani opened the scoring with an RBI-single. The Colonials scored two more times in the opening frame thanks to two bases-loaded walks.
Cleveland State answered in the bottom half of the first inning as they got one run back off of Colonials’ ace Madison DeVault. She went onto blank the Vikings the rest of the way in game one as she tossed a complete game and allowed just two hits.
The Colonials added an insurance run in the top half of the fifth inning on a solo home run from Jess Matheny which helped them cruise to a 4-1 win in the first game of the doubleheader. The Colonials outhit the Vikings 12-2 in the first game of the day.
The second game of the doubleheader was more of a blowout win for the Colonials as they downed the Vikings in just six innings due to the run rule.
Koutsogiani kicked the scoring off once again as she singled home the Colonials’ first run of the game in the first inning. The Colonials scored another first-inning run on a throwing error that allowed Courtney Poulich to score.
The Colonials added to their lead in the third inning behind six singles which included three RBI-producing hits from Matheny, Sequoia Dunlap, and Logan Black.
Kaylyn Hopf added two more runs on an RBI-single in the fifth before the Colonials really opened things up in the sixth inning when they tacked on four more runs.
The Vikings scored one run in each of the final three innings but it proved to not be enough as Kaitlyn Molitoris closed the door on the Vikings’ chances and capped off the series victory.
While the Colonials sit with a league record of 16-7, the Vikings in-league record is currently 16-5 as they still have a three-game series against Oakland left on their schedule. That means that the Colonials still have a chance to finish as the top-seed in the league but will need help from the Golden Grizzlies to achieve that feat.
The Colonials wrap up their regular season schedule with a final mid-week game against Pitt before they travel back to Ohio for a three-game series against Bowling Green on May 2. The Horizon League Championships start on May 7.
