Last season, Richards held a similar role at Sacred Heart as an assistant under head coach Anthony Latina. Sacred Heart finished 16-16 overall and 10-6 in the Northeast Conference (NEC).
Prior to his lone season with the Pioneers, he spent two years at Holy Cross. In his first year, he served as the Director of Basketball Operations before he was promoted to an assistant coaching role during the 2022-23 season.
Richards broke into coaching as a graduate assistant under Sean Miller in Arizona in 2018. In 2019, he served as the Director of Student-Athlete Development before being elevated to the Head Video Coordinator and the liaison with the academic and compliance office for his final two years with Arizona.
Before starting his coaching career, Richards played Division II basketball at Le Moyne, where he was a two-year starter. He scored 503 points and registered 138 assists all while helping the Dolphins to 59 wins and a 2018 Northeast-10 Conference title that earned them a trip to the NCAA D-II tournament.
With the hiring of Richards, RMU has nearly finalized its staff overhaul after going 10-22 and 6-14 in the Horizon League last season.
Assistant coaches Dave Fedor and Vince Johnson were relieved of their duties shortly after the 2023-24 season came to a close in March. Two months later, it was reported that associate head coach Mike Iuzzolino was leaving for the boys basketball coaching job at Sewickley Academy.
Director of Basketball Operations Matthew Sweet was the lone staff member under Toole to retain their position from the previous season.
