Robert Morris Lands Highest Rated High School Commit in Program History

College basketball changed forever with the addition of NIL and the transfer portal.

With the addition of NIL and the current transfer rules, a handful of the country’s best high school recruits are choosing to commit to contending mid-majors with the opportunity to play early in their career rather than sit on the bench behind upperclassman transfers at the high-major level.

While college basketball changed and evolved, Robert Morris head coach Andy Toole changed and evolved right along with it.

First, he mastered the transfer portal by making it a trend of finding under-the-radar gems. Now, with back-to-back 20-win seasons and a Horizon League championship to show off to high school recruits, Toole has landed his first program-altering high school recruit.

Four-star guard Peyton Kemp committed to Toole and the Colonials soon Tuesday night, according to Sam Kayser of LeagueRDY.

Kemp, who is now rated as the highest-rated commit in program history according to 247Sports, chose Robert Morris over other programs such as Penn State, Rutgers, Xavier, Toledo, Arkansas State, Old Dominion and Detroit Mercy.

Kemp made his name known in the basketball way before his ascension to four-star status in high school as he saw a rapid spike in social media followers when he was in elementary school. He currently has over 150,000 followers and plays at the legendary La Lumiere School which produced current NBA players Jaren Jackson Jr., Jaden Ivey, Isaiah Stewart and Jordan Poole.

Kemp will bring great size and length, especially for a mid-major program, as he stands at 6-foot-2. He is a sharpshooting guard that can also get downhill in a hurry to put pressure on opposing team’s forwards.

Not only is Kemp a massive recruiting win overall for Toole and the Colonials, but they stole Michigan’s top rated prospect right out of a Horizon League rivals’ backyard. Despite the fact that Detroit Mercy offered earlier on in the process and mainly focuses on in-state recruiting, Robert Morris swooped in late and secured Kemp’s commitment.

While being a more well-known commodity on the recruiting trail than Livingston, Kemp will have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of current Robert Morris guard Darius Livingston. Kemp has the potential to start games as a freshman but even if he finds himself as a rotational player, he will contribute right away once he arrives to Moon Township.
