The Robert Morris women’s lacrosse team is finding its footing after a rough 1-6 start to the season. The Colonials just picked up their third win of the season after taking down Old Dominion 11-10 in an overtime thriller on Wednesday.

With the win, the Colonials are now 3-7 on the season but have won two of their last three games including a victory over Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan in the team’s conference opener.

The Monarchs jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead but Madison Prietz knotted the score up later in the first quarter before the Colonials fell back behind. Two more goals from the Monarchs gave them a 3-1 lead after one quarter of play.

The Colonials scored once in the second quarter on a goal from Vivian LaMange but the team found themselves in an even deeper hole at halftime as the Monarchs tacked on two more in the quarter.

The third quarter is when the Colonials started to mount their comeback as they tallied six unanswered goals to take a 8-5 lead through the first three quarters. Jenna Irwin kicked off the scoring in the third and LaMange followed her up with her second of the game before Mia Berthoff scored three-straight goals to cap the quarter off.

The Monarchs made a push in the final quarter of regulation as they cut the deficit to just one after outscoring the Colonials 3-1 in the first seven minutes of the fourth. Irwin’s fourth goal of the game came less than three minutes later which gave the Colonials a bit of wiggle room.

That cushion was erased over the final four minutes of regulation as Sarah Murrell scored at the 3:43 mark and then Alex Kulinski tied the game up at 10-10 with just 14 seconds left.

The Monarchs looked as if they had the upper hand in the extra frame as the Colonials were forced to kill off a penalty. With the game still tied with under a minute left, the Colonials nearly won the game on a shot from Samantha Brothers but it hit off of the post and sailed wide.

The Colonials ended up winning the game 30 seconds after as Gia Anthony scored the game-winning goal with just eight seconds left in the overtime period.

While Irwin paced the Colonials with four goals and one assist, they received solid contributions from a handful of players. Berthoff tallied a hat-trick and one assist, LaMange scored twice and Anthony scored the game-winning goal.

Following the win over Old Dominion, Robert Morris is headed back to conference play for its next game as it will travel to Youngstown State on Saturday for a chance to move to 2-0 in conference play.
