While the start of academic year is still a couple of days away, the Robert Morris women’s soccer team kicked off the athletic year when they hosted Navy in the season opener on Thursday.

There is optimism within the women’s soccer program that this season could be a season to remember but it did not start off the way that most Colonials’ fans wanted as the Colonials dropped the first game of the season by the score of 3-0.

The first scoring chance for either team came from Colonials in the fourth minute but the shot did not land.

Despite the early aggressiveness from the Colonials, it was the Midshipmen that got on the board first as Marlee Heaven tallied the first goal of the game against junior goalkeeper Emma Cameron in the 15th minute.

Navy used that momentum to stay on the attack as it tallied a second goal just a minute later to make the score 2-0 early in the game.

Robert Morris had chances later in the first half to crawl back into it.

First, sophomore forward Madison Hurst hit a shot that looked promising but it ended up going over the net. After that, freshman forward Alayna Williams had a nice run towards the net but it was halted due to an offsides call.

Just before the end of the half, in the 42nd minute, the Midshipmen extended their lead to 3-0 after Ali Barrow put one past Cameron.

The second half was far less eventful but still displayed the Colonials’ fight and energy as senior captain Taylor Day recorded two shots-on-goal within the first 15 minutes of the half. Unfortunately, both shots were denied by the Midshipmen’s goalkeeper.

Following Day’s attempts on goal, neither team managed to tally a single shot-on-goal for the remainder of the game which was about 30 minutes of game time.

Despite the tough showing on Thursday, Robert Morris will look to get back to .500 on the season when the Colonials host the University of Southern Indiana next Thursday afternoon.
