The Colonials struck hard and fast in the first quarter as they made each of their first three shots and jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead. The lead grew to double-digits on a jumper by Jennica Suggs that made the score 17-7 at the 4:50 mark.
By the end of the first quarter, the Colonials managed to extend their lead to 19 points as they led by the score of 27-8 after Myriam Traore and Ava Leroux combined for 10 points over the last four minutes of the quarter.
Unfortunately for the Colonials, things would go down hill from that point forward.
The Panthers opened up the second quarter on a 7-0 run before the Colonials answered with two-straight buckets from former Panthers’ star Aislin Malcolm.
After Malcolm’s personal 4-0 run, the Panthers continued to chip away at the lead and eventually cut their deficit to 11 by the end of the second quarter. The Colonials led 38-27 at halftime but the momentum already shifted in favor of the Panthers.
Jada Lee opened the second half with a basket but the Panthers answered with a 8-0 run that turned into 18-2 run that put them ahead of the Colonials for the first time all game. The Colonials tried to weather the storm and traded a pair of baskets with the Panthers but their last lead came at the 1:22 mark of the third quarter when they led 48-47.
The Panthers’ defense got to the Colonials in the fourth quarter as they allowed just one field goal over the first eight-and-a-half minutes of the quarter which allowed them to run out on a 10-2 run that essentially iced the game.
Despite leaving the Pete with their first loss of the season, it came against a power-conference foe which is nothing to get discouraged about.
Robert Morris is back in action on Wednesday when it takes a road trip out to Eastern Michigan for the start of a home-and-home series between the two programs.
