Former Robert Morris defensive back Rob Carter Jr. is coming off of an impressive rookie season in the CFL and is now one step closer to finding a home on an NFL roster after signing a reserve/futures contract with the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday.

This is not the first NFL opportunity for the former Colonial as he attended the Baltimore Ravens rookie mini-camp last offseason after going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft.

After he failed to earn a contract from the Ravens last offseason, Carter took his talents north of the border and signed with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL). In his first season with the Lions, Carter recorded 51 tackles, five interceptions, a pick-six and one forced fumble.

“Robert earned every bit of this opportunity,” the BC Lions said in statement earlier this week. “He started every game, performed at a very high level and made some of the most outstanding individual plays we’ve seen in recent memory.”

Carter played his final two collegiate seasons at Robert Morris where he even went viral for his ridiculous interception against Utah State in the Colonials’ 2024 season opener. He amassed 66 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks and five interceptions  across 22 games.

He hauled in four of his five interceptions as a senior and even started to play on the offensive side of the ball by the end of the season as he made two catches for 12 yards. Additionally, Carter excelled as a kick returner and even scored a kick return touchdown against Central Connecticut State this past season.

Prior to his time at Robert Morris, Carter attended the University of Virginia at Wise, where he played in 22 games and recorded 77 tackles while starring on special teams.

After failing to stick with an NFL team in his first go around, Carter will aim to impress the Colts’ coaching staff enough to earn a spot on the team’s final roster or practice squad for the 2026-27 season.
