Robert Morris Falls to Monmouth in Overtime Heartbreaker
It has been a little over 24 hours since Robert Morris (3-3) fell to Monmouth (2-3) in overtime, despite looking as if they had the win in hand, not once, but twice.
Ryan Prather Jr. nailed what appeared to be a go-ahead three with 10 seconds left that put the Colonials up 61-60, but after a review, it was reversed to a two-pointer which ended up sending the game into overtime.
The Colonials again looked like they had the win secured as they stormed ahead of the Hawks midway through the overtime period and held a healthy 70-65 lead with 2:07 left.
That would be the last points that the Colonials could muster as they went the final two minutes without scoring a point. The Hawks rallied and scored the game-winning point on a free throw with just eight seconds left.
Robert Morris had a chance, rather two chances, to win it at the overtime buzzer but both shots did not fall.

Robert Morris started the game with complete control as it quickly jumped out to a commanding 17-5 lead due to a 12-0 scoring run. Monmouth suddenly woke up and fought back to cut the deficit in half at 28-22 by the under-eight timeout.
The Hawks continued their run and eventually took a one-point lead into halftime.
The Colonials managed to tie things up at 45-45 by the under-12 stoppage of the second half on a midrange jumper by Darius Livingston but the Hawks would go back ahead by a possession shortly after. The two teams traded buckets over the final 12 minutes before Prather stepped up and hit the game-tying shot with 10 seconds left.
After the review changed the outcome of the play to a two, the Hawks had a chance to win it at the buzzer in regulation but the three-pointer did not fall for Monmouth, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, the Colonials took the lead for the first time since the first half of the game on a three by Livingston which made the score 65-62. The freshman went onto score a layup and another three which pushed the Colonials’ lead to five with the score 70-65 but that would be the last time that the Colonials scored.
The Hawks battled back over the final two minutes and made it a one-point game with 28 seconds left on a pair of free throws.
It looked as if the Colonials were going to be able to turn to their free throw shooting to close the game out but the Hawks forced a timely turnover which gave them control of the outcome. With no shot clock, the Hawks took it down to eight seconds before an unfortunate foul sent them to the free throw line where they sunk both shots for a one-point lead.
The Colonials had time and a timeout left but did not use it as the first game-winning shot attempt by Livingston was missed and a second-chance shot by Albert Vargas also did not go into the hoop.
Robert Morris returns home after two tough road losses to host Illinois-Chicago on Wednesday before welcoming in Southern Utah and Stetson for the Urban-Bennett Invitational over the weekend.
