Youngstown State Uses Record-Setting Performance to Blowout Robert Morris
Robert Morris (0-2) entered Saturday’s game against Youngstown State (2-0) with hopes that they could bounce back from last week’s disappointing showing but ended up on the wrong side of another blowout instead.
After claiming their first lead of the season on an opening-drive field goal, the Colonials went on to get outscored 56-14 by the Penguins as they dropped their second-straight game to start the 2025 season.
The Colonials started the game with the ball and looked as if they corrected some of their offensive mistakes from a week ago as they marched down field before settling for a career-long 46-yard field goal from Jayson Jenkins.
On the drive, quarterback Zach Tanner went a perfect 4-of-4 for 45 yards but despite that, the offense left the field still in search of the first touchdown of the season.
The Penguins answered right back with a scoring drive of their own but one upped the Colonials and scored a touchdown. The score came on a one-yard touchdown connection between quarterback Beau Brungard and wide receiver Max Tomczak.
Following the go-ahead score, the Penguins never looked back as the Colonials’ could not contain Brungard.
The Penguins’ junior quarterback went on to set the Missouri Valley Conference record for rushing yards (267) by a quarterback in a game. He set the record in third quarter before exiting the game.
Despite Tanner and the offense looking sharp on the first drive of the game, the Colonials punted on their next four possessions without gaining many yards. Robert Morris totaled just 84 yards of total offense in the first half.
While the Colonials’ offense could not move the ball, the opposite was true for the Penguins’ offense as they scored touchdowns on all six of their first-half possessions. Of the six scores, Brungard rushed for three of them with runs of 72, 20 and four yards.
Robert Morris trailed Youngstown St. by the score of 42-3 at halftime and were out-gained 399-84 through the first two quarters.
The Penguins kept their foot on the pedal when the teams came out of the intermission as they marched right down the field before Brungard rushed in his fourth score of the game from 28 yards out.
In total, Brungard went 12-of-16 for 122 yards with one passing touchdown and added 10 carries for 267 yards and four rushing scores on the ground before being lifted from the game.
The Colonials found themselves down 56-3 early in the fourth quarter before they managed to score their first touchdown of the season when Tanner found Bluefield University transfer wide receiver Thomas Lee for a 34-yard touchdown.

The Colonials added another touchdown later in the quarter on a 16-yard strike from Tanner that found Maryland transfer receiver Kai Holloway streaking across the end zone.
While the Colonials managed to add two late touchdowns, they were completely outmatched for the second-straight week.
In conclusion, neither the offense or defense have shown much to be proud of through the first two weeks of the season. While that should be expected from a team that returned just two starters, the Colonials may have more questions about themselves after two games than they had before the season started.
Even with the two garbage-time touchdowns, the Colonials totaled just 233 yards of offense. In comparison, the Penguins put up a whooping 593 yards of total offense on Saturday.
In total, the Colonials were out-gained in total yardage 1,217-356 and outscored 101-20 through the first two games of the season.
The only silver lining is that Robert Morris opens up the team’s home schedule next weekend against Division-II West Liberty.
With a home game against an inferior opponent, the Colonials may finally have the chance to find an identity for themselves prior to the start of conference play.
