Robert Morris celebrates after coming back to defeat Toledo 75-70 at the UPMC Events Center on Dec. 13, 2025 -- RMU Athletics

MOON TWP, Pa. — Robert Morris (8-4) hosted Toledo (5-5), who entered the day 3-1 against Horizon League opponents, at the UPMC Events Center for what ended up as a historic 75-70 comeback win for the Colonials.

The Colonials came out of the gate solid and led 12-9 at the 14:19 mark of the first half but then went nearly 12 minutes without a field goal. During that span, the Rockets blasted off on a 25-1 run which put them up by 20 points near the end of the first half.

The Colonials intensity and energy level sputtered out as the first half rolled on but a halftime meeting with head coach Andy Toole revitalized the team, who managed to outscore the Rockets 51-28 in the second half en route to the second largest comeback win in program history.

Not only did the offense operate at a high-level due to great intensity and elite teamwork in the second half, the Colonials defense was the real reason that the comeback was possible as they held the Rockets to 5-of-29 (17%) shooting in the second half.

Toledo struck first but Robert Morris quickly responded as it jumped out to a 4-2 lead behind back-to-back buckets from Ryan Prather Jr. The Rockets tied it back up at 4-4 on a pair of free throws before DeSean Goode tallied two-consecutive buckets to make the score 8-4.

The Colonials eventually led 12-9 at the 14:19 mark of the first half after a layup by Nikolaos Chitikoudis but that would be the last points that the team would score for just over eight minutes and last field goal for the team for the next 12 minutes.

During the scoreless streak, the Rockets’ high-powered offense exploded and went on a 25-1 run that carried into the under-four stoppage. The Rockets held a commanding 34-13 lead by that point in the game.

The Colonials broke their field goal-less stretch on the team’s first three of the game by Prather at the 2:46 mark. They started 0-of-9 from three-point range.

Even after Prather’s three, the Rockets showed no signs of slowing down as they grew their lead to the 20-point mark on a pair of free throws by Sean Craig. The Colonials managed to cut it to 18 before halftime but still trailed 42-24 at the intermission.

Whatever Toole said to the guys at halftime brought some of the best team basketball that they have played all season out for the final 20 minutes.

The Colonials opened the half with a three by Albert Vargas which gave the team a sliver of energy, but a sliver is all that they needed as it turned into a 15-1 run real quick with additional threes by Prather and Ta’Zir Smith. The run put the Colonials right back into the game as the score became 43-39 in favor of the Rockets.

After Craig ended that run with a layup, the Colonials kept their foot on the gas on both ends of the floor as Chitikoudis made it a four-point game on a layup and then Smith banked in a tough contested lay to bring Robert Morris back to within two.

Sonny Wilson tried to revamp the Rockets’ offense as he scored two-straight midrange shots and helped the Rockets re-establish a two-possession lead. Wilson ended the game with a game-high 21 points.

Prather got a bucket back for the Colonials on a tip in but Craig answered right back with a layup and then a pair of free throws after Josh Hill was hit with a flagrant foul at the 12:24 mark. While the flagrant took some of the Colonials momentum away as the free throws made the score 53-45, the team did not stop fighting following the under-12 timeout.

Instead of withering away, the Colonials opened up another lengthy scoring run, 17-4 to be exact, in which Goode scored six-straight points and Wilds added four of his seven total points. During that run, the Colonials tied the game for the first time since it was 12-12 on a three by Wilds, before a free throw by Prather gave them a 57-56 lead.

The Colonials led 62-57 by the time that the run ended which lined up with the under-four timeout. The Colonials relied on one of their biggest weaknesses to close the final four minutes of the game out, their free-throw shooting abilities.

Despite not scoring a field goal over the final four-minute stretch of the game, the Colonials went 13-of-15 from the free throw line to clinch the second largest comeback in program history.

Not only was it a historic comeback for the Colonials, many of the individual performances were eye-popping.

Prather and Chitikoudis each finished with a double-double. Prather scored a team-high 17 points and added 10 rebounds while Chitikoudis added 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Goode nearly added a double-double himself but came up just short as he ended with 17 points and eight rebounds. Vargas scored 16 and dished out a game-high five assists in the win over Toledo.

Robert Morris is not done with its non-conference schedule just yet but the Colonials next game is a home Horizon League matchup against Youngstown State on Wednesday night. The Colonials will wrap up non-conference play on the 20th in what likely will be the program’s final trip ever to St. Francis.
