The Robert Morris men’s lacrosse team saw their six-game winning streak come to an end in the season finale as they fell to Le Moyne in overtime, 8-7.

The loss was the first league-play loss for the Colonials all season as they wrapped up their NEC schedule with a 6-1 record. With the results of Saturday, Le Moyne won the tiebreaker over RMU as they each finished with the same conference and will host next week’s NEC Tournament.

Le Moyne scored the game’s first goal, and the only one in the first quarter by either team, to take an early lead. Robert Morris tied the game up at one goal a piece in the second quarter when David Burr scored the Colonials first goal of the game.

The Dolphins jumped back ahead by one but the Colonials managed to answer again when Calum Brennan scored the equalizer before halftime. The two teams were knotted up at two after the first two quarters.

The Dolphins really opened up a lead in the third as they outscored the Colonials 4-1 in the period with the lone Robert Morris goal coming from Brennan.

Just when it looked like the Colonials were down and out, they flipped the script and scored four of their own in the fourth to send the game to overtime. The first two fourth-quarter goals came from Luke Prezioso to cut the deficit to 6-5 before Le Moyne scored to jump back up by two.

Liam Keane scored later in the quarter to make it a one-score game and it stayed that way until just before the buzzer when Prezioso roped in the game-tying goal with just seven seconds to go in regulation. The Dolphins went onto win the game in overtime when Brian Nephew scored the game-winner with 2:09 remaining on the clock.

The Colonials officially clinched the No. 2 seed in the NEC Tournament that begins on Thursday. The other participating programs include top-seed Le Moyne, No. 3-seed Long Island and No. 4-seed Detroit Mercy.

Robert Morris will take on Long Island in the opening round of the tournament. The Colonials beat the Sharks by the score of 13-9 in early April.

Robert Morris has won the NEC Championship twice before as they went back-to-back in 2018 and 2019. The Colonials departed the NEC following the 2020 season for the ASUN where they won that conference tournament once before returning to the NEC as a lacrosse member this season.
